When it comes to supplements to restore periods, you might already came across acetyl-l-carnitine*. But what is it and what effect has it the body and female hormones? Questions I want to answer in today’s blog post.
What is acetyl-l-carnitine and what effects does it have?
Acetyl-l-carnitine is a derivative of the amino acid l-carnitine.
It has a number of effects in the brain one of which is to increase LH pulsatility when it has decreased.
There are different studies proving this increase in LH and also showing that this supplement can help with restoring periods. LH acts on your ovaries and triggers estrogen and progesterone production which is crucial for getting a period.
Studies prove that especially females with amenorrhea and a decreased LH benefit from taking Acetyl-L-carnitine.
In one study, the woman with hypothalamic amenorrhea and low LH had a much more normal hormonal profile, and 6 out of 10 of those females had restored menstrual cycles after taking 2g of acetyl-l-carnitine for six months.
In another study, females with hypothalamic amenorrhea took 250mg ALC and 500mg l-carnitine per day. And again, LH levels increased, mostly in females with low LH. This study also found that cortisol and amylase levels were decreased in women with low LH, which indicates a reduction of stress.
This is also another effect to consider when taking acetyl-l-carnitine as stress is one of the causes for amenorrhea.
Will acetyl-l-carnitine help you to get your period back?
To sum it up, taking acetyl-L-carnitine taken with or without L-carnitine might lead to an increase and decrease of certain hormones in your body which is necessary for recovery of periods. But please keep in mind that your nutrition, exercise routine, energy balance and stress play an important role in the recovery process and can never be replaced by a supplement.
